SEVEN suspects were caught, two of them were shot and injured in a shootout, after a robbery at Promenade Mall in Mitchells Plain.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said Mitchells Plain police responded and stopped the robbers in their tracks following a business heist that was perpetrated at a cellphone shop in a mall in Mitchells Plain.

Rwexana said on their arrival at the mall, officers saw the robbers leaving the store.

“A shootout between the police and the robbers ensued and two suspects were shot and injured.

“They were transported to a hospital and were under police guard.

“Seven suspects aged between 20 and 40 were arrested and two firearms were recovered.

“Once charged the suspects are due to appear in the Mitchells Plain court,” Rwexana said.

The property that was robbed by the suspects was recovered on the scene.

In the dramatic video footage of the incident, numerous gun shots can be heard as the suspects clashed with the police.

Many onlookers at the scene were eager to see the activity, despite being concerned about stray bullets.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Sindile Mfazi commended the officers for their commitment to protect and serve the communities and bring the perpetrators to book.

DA spokesperson on community safety Reagen Allen said as much as he welcomed the arrest made, “criminals, often linked to gangs, have no regard for the safety of residents.

“I trust that those responsible will face the full might of the law.”

Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz commended the police on their swift arrests. This comes a few weeks after armed robbers hit N1 City Mall making off with 14 cellphones from the Foschini store.

Fritz urged anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
