Reality bit hard in 2019

Viewers couldn’t get enough of personalities, warts and all

- LIAM KARABO JOYCE

THIS year gave us some reality show moments, from new shows to ones we have grown to love. Whether you are into following your favourite celebrity and their lives, or of regular people finding love, here is our list of some of the best reality shows.

Being Bonang

The third season gave us fashion, looks and some of the best oneliners. This season we saw Bonang travel the world and even though there was more emphasis on her cousin “Pinky Girl”, Bonang still delivered reality television gold.

Living The Dream With Somizi

This might sound weird but you have to appreciate how real Somizi actually is. This season we saw him plan his traditional wedding with Mohale Motaung which could have passed for a royal wedding, if not better. We also saw him navigate through managing his mother’s career and making sure she is always treated like the queen she is.

Real Housewives of Jozi

We are so glad these ladies are back and even though season two just started, they are serving up the drama. This season we were introduced to five new housewives who all live in mega-mansions and never look at the price tag of anything. Housewive Christall Kay is back and fans can’t get enough of her.

Real Housewives of Potomac

Season four will go down as the breakout season of this series within the international franchise. The Potomac housewives are all about etiquette, class and who has the biggest house in their exclusive town, but all of that was thrown out the window when knives were flung at each other and loyalties questioned.

Survivor South Africa

From the first episode, it was obvious that Robert “Rob” Bentele displayed all the qualities needed to outwit, outlast and outplay his fellow castmates, and that’s exactly what he did on Island of Secrets which was filmed in Samoa. The seventh season of one of SA’s most popular reality shows was one of the best with fantastic blindsides, injuries and backstabbing.

Uyajola 99

South Africa’s version of Cheaters hit our screens like an earthquake. This show will possibly go down as one of the most outrageous local shows to ever air. Although it has been temporarily pulled off the air, Uyajola

99 trended every week and had all the ingredients of a top reality show.

Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Seventeen seasons later and America’s first family of reality television is still at it. This year we saw Khloe go through a public breakup from the father of her baby, Tristan Thompson, which all happened while the cameras were rolling. We saw Kim welcoming her fourth child via a surrogate and Kourtney snapping at every other family member.

Idols SA

Reality shows that are all about a singing competition are usually just about the singing. However, this last season of Idols saw the spotlight shine on the behind-the -scenes drama. There were rumours of bullying and violence between contestants and the exit of the Qwabe twins. 90 Day Fiance

There are very few shows that have us gasping in every scene but somehow 90 Day Fiance and spin-offs like Before The 90 Days do exactly that. The producers who select the couples deserve some kind of special award because these couples have some of the most dramatic lives we have seen.
