Buoyant Chiefs a tough challenge for City

CAN the mighty Amakhosi be stopped?

Well, that is what Cape Town City will try to do on Sunday when they take on Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium (3.30pm kick-off).

The teams go into the Absa Premiership encounter in different moods following their midweek fixtures.

Chiefs are in party mode after celebrating their 50th birthday this week, and they capped it off with a fine 3-0 victory over Highlands Park on Wednesday night, where Leonardo Castro (2) and Eric Mathoho scored the goals.

On the same day, City wasted a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with AmaZulu at Cape Town Stadium.

Surprise Ralani opened the scoring for the home team, and the lead was increased by Roland Putsche, all within the first 25 minutes.

Bongi Ntuli grabbed two goals before half-time for AmaZulu, though, and the teams earned a point each.

Chiefs increased their lead at the top of the league log to six points from second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, and will be looking to keep the birthday celebrations going with another win over City.

“I was in Cape Town at the weekend and saw how Cape Town City played and won their game after they went several games without a win. We will reflect on Wednesday’s match and then work out a plan of tackling City on Sunday,” Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp said.

The Capetonians are 11th on the 16-team log with 17 points, just three more than bottom side Baroka FC, and a defeat to Chiefs could see them edge even closer to the relegation zone.

The other Western Cape team in action this weekend is Stellenbosch FC, who play Highlands Park in Tembisa tomorrow (3.30pm kick-off).

Stellenbosch is desperate for the three points, as they are second from the bottom in the standings.
