Government’s argument against gun ownership defies logic

-

WHILE the gun ownership debate is raging across the country, both the Minister of Police and the relevant government agencies are fiddling as Rome burns by blaming shootings and the high murder rate on guns instead of focusing on the real issues of poverty, joblessness, lack of housing, lawlessness, lack of adequate policing, low conviction rates, and the inability by the authorities to curb crime and infighting among the Cape gangs.

Blaming guns for the mayhem is absurd and ridiculous and is a diversion to cover up the underlying cause of crime. Bleating about too many guns and limiting the issue of gun licenses and attacking expired gun licence holders (all 450 000 of them) is a farce and a smokescreen.

Those propagating nonsensical and convenient statistics as done by Gun Free SA, which is aware of the facts but nevertheless leads the attack on guns, gun ownership and honest law-abiding gun owners, do so simply because it is PC and convenient to their agenda to render the public defenceless against attacks by criminals.

The majority of civilian guns used in attacks are not stolen from the public, which is another convenient lie put out by the anti-gun brigade.

Legal guns are bought by criminals from other criminals who obtained them legally and illegally as a result of police inefficiency in vetting the applicants.

Corruption within SAPS also plays a big part in the issuing of civilian gun licences .

The absurdity of the suggestion by the authorities that self-defence/ personal protection will no longer be a legitimate reason to own a gun defies logic.

Why would any honest lawabiding citizen buy a gun if not for his or her protection?

Blaming guns for violence and robbery and gang shootings and banning gun ownership is like cutting off your hand because your finger is broken. Fix the finger first. COLIN BOSMAN | Newlands
