Time to unite to save South Africa and its economy – before there is nothing left for us to save

- MO NOOR JOSEPH | Crawford

IN AS MUCH as some countries are trying to get back to normal by wanting to jump-start their economies, the atmosphere worldwide is still extremely negative as far as that is concerned.

The majority of the people will still be very hesitant to do so, and not until a vaccine is ready or even on the horizon.

I have no hesitation in saying to my fellow South Africans – have faith, have patience, and don’t panic. South Africa has the honour of being the “Cradle of Civilisation” for a good reason. We are truly blessed. With the help of the Almighty and his blessings, we will pull through once again.

We have to thank the government and politicians across the board for all the sacrifices they have made monetarily and in every other respect. We have to thank all the people working on the dangerous front lines in the fight against Covid-19. On the other hand, we can’t expect just the Motsepe’s, the Rupert’s and the Oppenheimer’s to give away their millions. Now is the time for all the very privileged and very rich, with all that excess money in the coffers, to come to the rescue of this beautiful country of South Africa and it’s people. A country now desperately in need of your generosity.

If ever there was a time to invest your money for the benefit and survival of the heart and soul of the country, that time is right now. All and sundry, small businesses to very big businesses, we are all in the same boat. It is not a matter of survival of the fittest, but the survival of all our people. All those shares and that excess money in the bank won’t be of any benefit without an economy and its workers. We are now talking of the life and death of the people, as well as the economy.

People are already starving, and looting and everything that goes with it will be the order of the day if we don’t take action and make it our civil duty to help feed the poor. People are desperate. If they don’t die of starvation, they will die of coronavirus, so they have nothing to lose. I have seen, in my own area, how people are now desperately scrambling to get food to the needy and the hungry, but under controlled lockdown conditions. The only way to beat this virus is if we stay indoors and help other people to stay indoors as well.

On the Covid-19 front, South Africa, in spite of its difficulties, is doing well. I don’t want to say extremely well because this virus knows no bounds and anything is possible. If we put all our differences aside and let our president and his team of experts lead the way, we can succeed with the least amount of casualties. A record amount of 2 371 people have died in America – in one day alone. Our hearts really and truly go out to them, and to the many thousands worldwide who have perished so far.

The good omens, no doubt, are showing for us South Africans. Who else but the WHO has put South Africa right on top as the “Gold Standard Model” of fighting Covid19. We have been frontrunners in many firsts, on the medical front, in our short history, so no doubt – with the goodwill of all South Africans and the help of Almighty God – we might just surprise ourselves and the rest of the world by leading the way forward.
