Protests intensify in Imizamo Yethu

- Staff Reporter

VIOLENT protests continued yesterday in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay as residents erected illegal structures.

The protests erupted after the structures were removed by police on Sunday. The unrest is also related to a need for land in the community.

JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security, said: “People started putting up illegal structures on land adjacent to Imizamo Yethu and law enforcement acted to remove the structures, following which public violence erupted with the land invaders attempting to blockade roads.”

Malusi Booi, Mayco member for Human Settlements, said: “This land is for planned development. The City does not have the resources to cater to newly formed settlements at the expense of planned service provision.” |
