THE provincial department of health is sharing positive Covid-19 survivor stories, to encourage people to be more positive and warm towards Covid-19 sufferers and reduce stigma associated with the virus.

Western Cape Health spokesperson Mark Van Der Heever said that the department has a few initiatives that are working to counter Covid-19 stigma in communities.

“We have already initiated our hotspot communications drive to educate communities on all issues around Covid-19, including the stigmatisation aspect”.

“Our hotspot teams are working with various community structures, local leaders and influencers, and faith based organisations to support people infected and affected by coronavirus”.

He said the initiatives are inclusive of various engagements, radio talks, and through our community health workers going door to door.

“Our appeal is to support each other during this pandemic, and beyond, as the improvement of our communities is a whole of society approach,” said Van Der Heever.

Social Development Minister Sharna Fernandez said: “We are witnessing increased reports of stigmatisation and acts of discrimination against individuals, as well as anyone perceived to have been in contact with the virus. The psychological impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has also been fuelled by misinformation.”

“To the many individuals and families experiencing trauma due to discrimination or stigmatisation because of contracting Covid-19, I would like to urge you to not suffer in silence, but to speak out and seek support,” said Fernandez.
