Ons Plek in desperate need of assistance

- | ARMAND HOUGH African News Agency (ANA) Shakirah Thebus

DESPITE donor fatigue setting in amid one of the largest crises to date, relief organisation Gift of the Givers (GOTG) have tirelessly attempted to assist as many communities in need as possible during the Covid-19 pandemic.

GOTG donated a month’s supply of food, hygiene products and other essential goods, to the value of R20 000, to the Ons Plek shelter for young girls, yesterday. Ons Plek director Pam Jackson said sports events and other key fundraising drives were cancelled due to the pandemic, and some donor companies had closed down or redirected their funding to Covid-19-specific relief efforts.

If it does not receive sufficient funding, the shelter in Mowbray faces the possibility of downsizing or closing its doors.

It houses 80 infants and girls up to the age of 18, and provides food and support services to between 70 to 80 children through the Ukondla initiative in Philippi.

About R800 000 is needed between now and March 2021, and the shelter aims to raise R250 000 in the short term. The public and businesses are urged to donate to the shelter via its BackaBuddy campaign (Keep Ons Plek Open & Girl Street Children Safe) or through contacting Jackson via email at pam.reflect@gmail.com or at 072 247 8127. |
