Partnerships forged to eradicate hunger
IN AN EFFORT to provide relief to hundreds of families across the province, who are struggling to put food on the table for their families, SA National Parks (Sanparks) – in partnership with the local government and NGOs – hosted a food donation drive on Monday afternoon.
The partnership is an effort to provide hunger relief to hundreds of families living in disadvantaged communities across the province.
The organisations, which have been supporting numerous vulnerable communities throughout the lockdown, have supported communities with not only food parcels but large water tanks as well.
One of the organisations that has been working closely with Sanparks through their venture is George based Ithemba Lobomi, a local NGO that works to assist vulnerable child headed households in Wilderness, George and surrounding areas.
Ithemba Lobomi chief executive Sharon Hendriks said the need for support was great, however, resources were scarce, which is why the organisation strongly supported the notion of partnerships to assist the greater good.
Speaking at the Regional launch of SA National Parks Week in Wilderness, Hendriks said: “Solutions begin with individuals and emphasised the importance of mental health, especially within our youth.”
George Tourism chief executive Joan Shaw said: “The impact of the pandemic on tourism in the region was unfavourable, but lower hanging fruits were to maximise products that are safe and adhere to lockdown regulations. Sanparks is one of the large players in the region, providing accommodation and various activities to visitors.”
SANParks in the Garden Route is using the free access SA National Parks Week campaign, funded by FNB and Total SA, to “reconnect society”. The week-long campaign, launched by Minister of Environmental Affairs Barbara Creecy in the West Coast, began on November 16 and will run until November 20, 2020. |
