The ABC of CPR
Airway
Act fast by checking the unconscious person’s vital signs. Call for help. If no response, call 10177 or another ambulance number. Give all information to the emergency call handler – ask them to bring an AED (automated external defibrillator).
Breathing
Tilt head back, lift the chin up – look, listen and feel for breathing for up to 10 seconds. If not breathing normally, pinch nose close, cover the mouth with yours and blow until you see the chest rise. Give two breaths; each breath should take about a second.
Compression
Give chest compressions by pushing down on the centre of the chest 30 times. Push hard and fast (almost two compressions a second). After 30 compressions, give two breaths. Continue cycles of 30:2 until professionals take over or normal breathing returns.
