WINDHOEK: A second person has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of over N$1.1 million (R1m) from a bank in Namibia, local media reported yesterday.

Amalia Akwaake was arrested on Monday at Ondangwa in the Oshana region, according to local newspaper Informante. She appeared in the Swakopmund magistrate’s court and her case was postponed to June 2.

Akwaake will appear alongside bank manager Engelborg Strauss, aged 47, who is accused of stealing over N$1.1m from her employer.

Strauss allegedly stole the money from the Standard Bank branch in Arandis, west central Namibia, where she was employed as a branch manager.

Strauss’s husband is a senior administrative official at the Arandis town council.
