EVITA GETS THE JAB
TANNIE Evita Bezuidenhout, also known as performer, author, satirist and social activist Pieter-Dirk Uys, yesterday received a Covid-19 vaccination in public in an effort to encourage others over-60 to get the injection.
The public vaccination took place at the Wesbank Community Hall in Malmesbury during Premier Alan Winde’s vaccine site visit to the town.
Perched on the centre of the stage and dressed in a flowing grey leopardprint top, wearing a short grey wig, Tannie Evita received her jab and said: “I was really very nervous, but my grandchildren said to me, gogo, don’t be nervous, it’s just a small prick. And it was.”
Winde said: “We are excited to join Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout today as she receives her vaccination in the West Coast District. She is helping create awareness for the importance of getting vaccinated.
“This, of course, is not the first time she has helped with important health awareness campaigns, having been a powerful advocate for HIV awareness and education. I admire her dedication, and I am personally a very big fan.”
Meanwhile, a pensioner from Langa who had complained about being sent to Mitchells Plain for her jab, got some relief yesterday when an official in the premier’s office organised for her to go to the clinic of her choice.
Cikizwa Malgas, 65, visited the Cape Argus to complain that she and some of her neighbours were sent to Mitchells Plain Hospital to receive their Covid-19 vaccinations, instead of to the nearby Langa Clinic.
Before coming to the Argus, Malgas had gone to the premier’s office to lodge a complaint about the vaccine registration system sending her out of her way for the jab.
Yesterday Malgas said she was delighted to have been directed to see the head of the Langa clinic.
Health department spokesperson Natalie Watlington said: “Where patients have been booked outside of their area, we advise that they present to their nearest site with the SMS confirmation of their booked appointment so that they can be accommodated.”
