SOUTH AFRICANS are anticipating a blissful spring this year. It is because, in 2020, there wasn't much fun in the air due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And the vaccine was not yet available.

However, now that millions of people are getting vaccinated, especially the youth, many are eager to enjoy themselves this season. If you’re looking for a place where you can welcome spring in style, these are some of the events to attend.

Joburg

6th Alex Music Festival

One of the biggest townships in South Africa, Alexandra is hosting the 6th annual Alex Music Festival. The festival will take place at Dandy Lifestyle Corner, north of Joburg on September 4. Alex Music Festival is a concert that helps feed disadvantaged children in and around Alexandra. It also serves as a way of celebrating upcoming and big artists.

“We are a group of young people who are qualified in our fields and running our small businesses. We all came together and decided to create jobs and help feed the needy of Alexandra Township.

“We have been running for a few years now, and we work with more than five homes in and around Alex and surrounding areas,” read a statement from the festival’s social media pages.

Some of the artists who will be performing include the multi-award-winning Amapiano artist Kabza de Small, House DJ Oscar Mbo, Young Stunna, Sir Trill, and many more. Tickets start from R100 and are available at Computicket.

Cape Town

Cape Town Street Food Festival

Home Cooked meals are great, but sometimes you have to try something prepared by someone else, which is why you have to check out the Street Food Festival in the Mother City.

“The Street Food Fest is one of the highlights of any foodie’s calendar. The annual market is a veritable feast of local fare, from gourmet braai-food (barbecue) to vinegar-soaked slaptjips (thick-cut fries). Expect night markets, food entrepreneur talks, live music, and some of the most delicious grub the city has to offer,” read a statement from the organisers.

The festival runs from September 1-3 at Side Street Studios, 48 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town.

Open Book Festival

And for the bookworms, the Open Book Festival is taking place at the Fugard Theatre from September 6-10.

Expect to see top writers from across the world such as Bongani Kona, Efemia Chela, Hellen Moffett, Kelly Smith and many others, while you shop for the best-selling reads. There will also be a poetry session as well as informative talks from some of the authors.

Durban

The Joint Jazz Cafe

Not everyone wants to welcome spring by going to the beach. Some want to sit back and have a good laugh. If you’re a person who enjoys jokes, then the Joint Jazz Cafe is where you should be on September 1. The Friends of SA Comedy will be hosting Monde Blose and friends. Blose will be joined by Flymotion, Churchboy, Amawele Asechesterville and Master to make sure you experience a night full of laughter. The show starts at 8pm, tickets start from R100 at Quicket, and no persons under the age of 18 are allowed.

Wherever you go, please make sure you wear a mask, sanitise regularly and keep a safe distance.
