Sandwich drive for the hungry

- BERNELEE VOLLMER

50 000 sandwiches in eight hours. That’s the challenge Cape Town. Help raise food and funds for the needy by joining the Sarmiethon, taking place at the V&A Waterfront, jetty venue 2, on November 24.

Organisers are calling on families, corporates or gwroups of friends to join in the spirit of giving, just ahead of the festive season.

Groups of eight will be challenged to make as many sandwiches as possible in the span of eight hours in tag-team style. This could be a fun team-building experience for you and your family or even colleagues.

Danny Diliberto, the founder of Ladles of Love organisation, said: “The sandwich drive was born in the peak of lockdown of the pandemic where people made sandwiches and boiled eggs from the safety and comfort of their homes.

“These ready-made sandwiches and eggs would then be collected and distributed to our network of beneficiaries across the Cape peninsula, helping feed more undernourished children and people than ever before.”

Hunger and malnourishment are major issues in South Africa and their consequences are evident within our communities.

“An estimated 30 million people in South Africa are food insecure and 10 million suffer from real hunger daily,” said Wendy Bergsteedt, group head of marketing and CSI at Coronation.

“As a society we can’t afford to stop caring now. Every small effort adds up and we can make a difference,” Bergsteedt explained.

Coronation and Ladles of Love have partnered to make this event a success as they raise awareness of the issue of hunger across the globe.

People can join this event by visiting www.ladlesoflove.org.za where you can sign up your team of choice. If you are unable to join the event, you are given the option to donate R5 towards a sarmie.

The event starts at 9am. Each team will consist of eight members working for two-hour slots. The last shift will be between 3pm and 5pm followed by a short prize-giving.

“Lets rally together, Cape Town, to smash our goal of making 50,000 sandwiches for our homeless and indigent neighbours who need our help,” said Bergsteedt.
