Flatfoot Dance Company to dazzle with performances at KZNSA Art Gallery
FLATFOOT Dance Company plans to take audiences on a journey of explosive dance, celebrating how rhythm connects people during the season of joy and thanksgiving.
Earth Rhythms showcases Flatfoot’s award-winning contemporary dance style, infused with a bit of street dance, that is set to leave audiences mesmerised.
The show is choreographed by Lliane Loots, Sifiso Khumalo, Jabu Siphika, Mthoko Mkhwanazi, Sbonga Ndlovu, Siseko Duba, Ndumiso Dube and Zinhle Nzama.
The performance features celebrated Durban poet Ongezwa Mbele, whose rhythmic spoken words weave a connection between dance and music.
Commenting on the event, dance teacher and choreographer Jabu Siphika says, “The event that we’re presenting now is a joyful work which includes different forms of art, that people will see and enjoy. People can expect singing, dancing and poetry.
“We are expressing our joy, that throughout the whole year, with Covid-19 attacking the whole world, we have managed to survive as a company and be able to create more work for the public to enjoy.”
The KwaMashu-born star says while gumboot dancing and Indlamu (traditional dancing) were his first love, he discovered contemporary dancing while in high school, and immediately connected with it.
“In high school, I met Eric Shabalala, who is now late, and he introduced me to contemporary dance, and I joined their Saturday projects at Siwela Sonke Dance Company.
“Shortly after that, I began my dance training at Phenduka Dance Theatre for two years and then became a professional dancer. I worked at Phenduka for a year as a professional dancer, and then in 2006, I joined Flatfoot Dance Company.
“My art is about telling a story through my body and expressing my feelings in a unique type of way. I also fight politics through our body because sometimes, when we speak, they tend to ignore us, that is why we use our bodies, because action speaks louder than words.”
The Flatfoot Dance Company’s showcase kicks off on Friday, December 10. Both shows start at 6.30pm. Tickets are R100. Bookings via flatfootdancecompany@gmail.com
