Clifton and Glen Beach ratepayers want to establish a CID for the area

RATEPAYERS in the Clifton and Glen Beach areas are preparing to establish a city improvement district (CID) for the area.

The plan is to establish dedicated, expert urban and public safety management with 24/7 on-call service to improve safety.

Chairperson of the CID steering committee Tshepo Mahloele said a survey conducted among Clifton and Glen Beach residents clearly showed that public safety and public space management were two priorities.

“We have done an enormous amount of work in assessing exactly what is required for quite a spread-out area. Large swathes of public space that require better day-to-day management, and public security – both on the ground and virtual – is really crucial,” Mahloele said.

This included addressing congestion and traffic control which, given the area’s popularity, are problematic. In season, roughly 55 000 vehicles a day traverse Victoria Road, causing major traffic delays and overcrowding.

The plan aims to address rising crime, urban decay, fire risk and decreased municipal and police services. The committee said the role-players hoped to respond to the needs outlined by the urban management survey.

“The survey prescribed by the CID is a democratic process and this is done to establish the needs of the people. Sixty percent of all property owners must vote in favour of establishing the CID before it can be legally constituted. The Clifton CID is an inclusive initiative and everybody will be welcome in our safer, cleaner and inviting area,” Mahloele said.
