CAPE Town has been named as one of the host cities for the 2023 T20 Women’s World Cup, along with Paarl and Gqeberha.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) yesterday announced the venues for the International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament, to be staged from February 10 to 26.

It will be Newlands’ first time to stage a major ICC event since hosting the semi-final of the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007.

Cape Town mayor Geordin HillLewis said: “Cape Town’s inclusion as a host city is a glowing endorsement and confidence in our ability to host successful major international events.

“Our officials look forward to working with Cricket South Africa and the International Cricket Council to ensure that we put together a memorable tournament for cricket lovers.

“The City is proud to play host to another first African World Cup celebrating women’s sport, as this event as well as the 2023 Netball World Cup will be hosted in Cape Town next year.”

St George’s Park in Gqeberha and Boland Park will host their first international ICC tournament since the 2003 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Eight of the 10 participating nations for the Women’s T20 World Cup have been confirmed, with South Africa, champions Australia, India, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies all competing for the world title.

The remaining two slots will be filled in September following a qualifying event in the UAE.

In addition, Benoni and Potchefstroom will host the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in January 2023.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetly said it was an exciting time for women’s cricket with the introduction of the U19 T20 World Cup.

“We are delighted to announce the host cities for both women’s events taking place in South Africa in early 2023,” he said.

“It is a very exciting time for women’s cricket with the first U19 T20 World Cup showcasing the future stars of our sport and the next edition of the ultimate prize in the T20 format.”

“I have no doubt the host venues identified across both events will provide the best platform to deliver two unforgettable World Cups and another significant milestone for women’s sport,” he added.

Tournament Director, Russell Adams, said: “We’re thrilled to announce the three cities to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

“The Eastern and Western Cape are prime cricket and tourist locations with great facilities and infrastructure. We have no doubt that these venues will step up to make this a memorable and uniquely African celebration of cricket for the local and international fans attending the event.”
