City plans to revamp Wynberg CBD, calls for public comment

THE City has called for Wynberg commuters to comment on plans to revamp the Wynberg public transport interchange.

The City said the current facility was situated in the vicinity of the Wynberg railway station. It is stretched beyond its capacity with nearly 48 000 commuters, 1500 minibus taxis and Golden Arrow buses making use of the public transport interchange (PTI) on a daily basis.

Urban mobility Mayco member Rob Quintas said the proposed concept design aims to address all of these challenges, while at the same time making provision for the roll-out of the MyCiTi service to Wynberg within the next few years.

“The current PTI is in a poor state, partly because of the lack of investment in prior years. The facility is not nearly big enough to accommodate all of the commuters and operators using this space. The surrounding transport infrastructure, the roads and walkways are old and insufficient for the traffic volume, be it for pedestrians or vehicles,” Quintas said.

He also said that the new concept would help ease the operation of minibus taxis, with each operation in the directions from west-north, westsouth and east will have their own dedicated operations area, their own facilities and dedicated entrance and exit routes, and it will have a positive impact on local businesses.

“There will be sufficient space for ranking, drop-and-go, and parking between peaks. It will enable pedestrians to walk freely without having minibus taxis obstructing walkways and it will be safe, as there will be additional lighting,” Quintas said.

With this revamp idea in motion, the commuters are urged to voice their thoughts and what they would like the City to add. The closing date for comments is Friday, December 9, 2022. Submit a comment via www.capetown. gov.za/haveyoursay. Send an email to Transport.news@capetown.gov.za. Hand in your written comments at the Subcouncil 20 office. Attend the information day on November 17, 2022.

Quintas said if all goes as planned, the detailed design should be concluded by the end of 2023.
