Khayelitsha given a boost with a tour of small businesses
KHAYELITSHA Tourism and the City explored the township’s uniqueness by visiting small businesses.
This was to try to revive tourism in the area by showcasing the products, experiences and services available, and to create an awareness of businesses that contribute to the African culture and “Kasi” style within the tourism sector.
Economic growth Mayco member James Vos joined the tour.
“It is really great to have you all together as we will put the spotlight on some of the products that are available in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas,” he said.
“Cape Town is a lot more than just mountains and beaches. We are a kaleidoscope of culture, cuisine and communities. The purpose of this Khayelitsha gathering is to bring together people from different corners of the city’s tourism industry and to help them find synergies in terms of their product development.”
Those who attended were given a peek of the offerings, with a stop at Siki’s Koffee Kafe, the Spinach King, Khaltsha Cycles, Spine Road Lifestyle & Restaurant, and The Spade Boutique Hotel.
Siki’s Koffee Kafe in iLitha Park was established by Sikelela Dibela, who opened a coffee shop in his garage at home.
“I started off as a dishwashing guy in a café, worked my way up to be a store manager, and then went overseas for two years. Coming back home, I decided that I want to introduce a coffee culture to the people of Khayelitsha,” Dibela said.
For those looking for fun, Khaltsha Cycles rents bicycles for a day. It also offers a bicycle repair service.
It is a child-friendly environment and has space where one can have lunch or coffee.
