KHOSI Ngema, 25, the talented actress known for her role in the popular Netflix series Blood and Water, has taken a bold step into the music industry with the release of her debut single, Why.

Now known as “Kho’si”, the multifaceted artist shared insights into her musical journey, creative process, and plans in the music world.

“I’ve been making music since I was 15, and now I feel I’m ready to share it with the world,” Ngema revealed when asked about her inspiration for venturing into music.

The timing seemed right for her to embark on this new chapter of her artistic career.

The creative process behind Why was described as spontaneous yet intentional. Ngema recounted how she and her producer, Marco Benz, experimented with a new sound, blending elements of Afro and amapiano music.

“We made the song in one night,” she said. “I composed and wrote the song while playing around with the instruments and freestyling.”

Ngema’s experience as an actress in Blood and Water has undoubtedly influenced her approach to music, especially in terms of storytelling. While the mediums differ, she sees them both as avenues for expression and connecting with her audience.

“Blood and Water set me up for stepping into the music scene, confidence-wise,” she noted.

One significant influence on Ngema’s musical journey is her eclectic paternal grandmother, whose essence and musical style left a lasting impact.

“She was a star,” Ngema reminisced.

“Growing up, I listened to her music and the music she would listen to such as Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading, and because of this, I play the guitar today.”

Why has been described as a trendy sing-along girl anthem with a mix of pop and amapiano, showcasing Ngema’s experimental and evolving musical style. She intentionally explored new sounds to represent her versatility as an artist.

Despite the challenges of balancing acting, singing, songwriting, and producing, Ngema is determined to pursue all her creative passions. “Time management is key,” she emphasised. “It’s about being proactive and going the extra mile for myself.”

Fans can look forward to more music from Ngema, as she plans to release a body of work, possibly an EP or an album, later this year. Her success with Why marks the beginning of an exciting musical journey for this multitalented artist.
