Family believe 28s to blame after woman, 19, shot dead

A 19-YEAR-OLD Blikkiesdorp resident has been shot dead in the third such incident in the community in about two weeks.

Megan Jones’s body was found in Thubelisha, near Delft South, yesterday. Police are investigating. Jones was the mother of a one-year-old child. Her family and friends believe that the 28s gang is behind the killing.

Last week a friend of the family, Jones’s cousin’s girlfriend, was also shot – but she survived.

Jones’s friend, Megan Junies, said Jones had left her house on Monday night to visit a friend elsewhere in Blikkiesdorp. Junies said she had been asleep at Jones’s house at the time.

She was the last person to see Jones alive.

It was not clear whether Jones actually reached her friend’s house.

Junies believes 28s gang members accosted Jones en route to her friend’s house and took her to her brother’s house nearby in an attempt to lure him outside.

Junies said that Jones’s brother was not a gangster, but that the men in the area had started clamping down on the gangs.

Her sister-in-law, Tharwa Jones, said: “They are fighting the gangsters in the camp, but this is angering the 28s.”

She said Jones’s brother had been one of the men targeting the gangsters.

Western Cape police spokesman November Filander said Jones’s body had been discovered by a passerby in the early hours of yesterday morning.

She had suffered a gunshot wound to the face, he said. There had been no arrests and a murder case had been opened.

Filander said police suspected that a separate incident in the area, in which a shack was gutted, was linked to gang in-fighting.

Nobody was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
