Delpech to give Winged Foot the edge

- RICHARD MCMILLAN

Owner-breeder Mary Slack is breeding some top horses at her Wilgerbosdrift Stud and although the Right Approach filly Winged Foot has fluffed her lines a couple of times, she looks the one to beat in the non-black type Subaru Umsinzi Handicap over 1 800m at Scottsville on Sunday.

This merit rated handicap for fillies and mares over 1 800m looks quite open and there are a few with chances of making the frame. However, Winged Foot has won her last two races very impressively and although they were not against opposition of the calibre she meets on Sunday, she has caught the eye as having the potential to progress to greater things.

She has won three times and finished second in another of her races and in each case she has been ridden by stable jockey Anthony Delpech. In her three other races different riders have been engaged.

On Sunday Delpech rides her again and as he obviously gets along well with the three-year-old, one should expect another good performance. She appears to enjoy racing handy and in her last two winning runs over 1 600m and 2 000m she has accelerated in the finish, last time winning by over five lengths.

Another three-year-old that appears to have a chance is the daughter of Kahal from the Kumaran Naidoo yard, Top Talent. She has won twice and been placed three times in her eight starts, last time producing a flying finish to beat Six Blue Notes over 1 600m and her 400m to finish time of 21,9 seconds was outstanding.

Lightweight jockey Nicky Roebuck was aboard her on that occasion and partners her again on Sunday.

Kethro

Private trainer Adam Kethro has done very well from his Midlands operation and his Silvano filly Dadewethu is not without a chance. She is well under sufferance at the weights but she ran two good seconds in January and her last run behind Top Talent is best ignored as she had to be checked in running and hit the rail.

Isle Of Dogs from the Craig Eudey stable is another with a chance having placed in her last two races, the most recent when less than two lengths third to Miss Maddie over 2 000m at Greyville.

Alec Forbes, who was aboard her in those two races, is again in the saddle and from a good draw could steer the Strike Smartly filly to a place.

The Gavin van Zyl-trained Filly Bushwacker and Sunningdale from the Paul Lafferty stable are also in with money chances as is the Joey Ramsden-trained Atair, but if Winged Foot continues to show the improvement seen in her last two races, she could be the one to beat.
