UCT’S Max Price to stay in top job

- Michelle Jones

MAX PRICE is to hold the top job at UCT for another fiveyear term.

Archbishop Emeritus Njongonkulu Ndungane, chairman of the university’s council, announced earlier this week that Price’s fiveyear term of office as vicechancellor, begun on July 1, 2008, had been renewed.

In a statement addressed to colleagues and students, Ndungane wrote that he had consulted with Price to gauge his interest in having his contract extended. He had then consulted with the council in November, which had overwhelmingly supported his proposal that Price should be offered a second term.

“I then put the Council’s proposal before the Senate early in December 2011, and it again passed with overwhelming support. Such a decision ordinarily requires at least a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate; in this case the proposal passed with 90.6 percent in favour of renewing Dr Price’s term of office.”

Price would now serve until June 30, 2018.

“On behalf of the council, I wish to congratulate Dr Price on his ments so far…”

Price was not available for comment yesterday.

He is most often in the spotlight with regard to UCT’S controversial admissions policy which uses race as a proxy for classifying students as disadvantaged.

Last month Price called for public comment on the university’s admissions policy, which is under review.

He had consistently said the use of race in the admission policy was undesirable and that alternative proxies for disadvantage should be identified.
