Hyundai revitalises its Elantra range

- MOTORING STAFF

YUNDAI’S current Elantra, first launched in SA in 2011, has received a stylistic update and a host of design improvements based on customer feedback.

The compact sedan gets a redesigned front end with new LEDtrimmed headlights, grille, bumper and L-shaped fog lights, while at the back there’s a new two-tone bumper and LED-based taillights.

The old Elantra’s 16” steel wheels have also been replaced with 17” alloys.

Inside, the centre air vent and armrest have been moved upwards

Has a result of customer feedback, and the (optional) automatic gear lever has been redesigned to pull straight back instead of through a zig-zag gate. Side mirrors fold in electronically now, the driver’s window gets an auto-up function, the climate control interface has been updated and the audio system’s been improved with integrated Bluetooth connectivity.

Hyundai also says special effort has gone into reducing NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) levels, and the new model benefits from thicker carpets, anti-vibration pads on the floor and firewall, expand- able foam in the A-pillars, noise-absorbing material on the air ducts, and improved suspension bushes.

The previous 1.8-litre model has been chopped from the Elantra lineup, leaving only a 96kW/157Nm 1.6 (unchanged in power) which is available with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearboxes. Hyundai claims average petrol consumptions of 6.4 and 6.9l/100km respectively.

All Hyundais come with fiveyear/150 000km warranties and five-year/90 000km service plans. The new Elantra is priced at R247 900 for the manual and R262 900 for the automatic version.
