FOOTPRINTS led police from where the body of 5-year-old Khayelitsha girl Anovuyo Ndamase was found to the shack of Bongani Dlamini, the man charged with her murder.

State prosecutor Manelisi Macaba told the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court yesterday that police searched Dlamini’s home and found blood on the walls.

Dlamini was making his first appearance and was also charged with kidnapping.

Ndamase’s body was found stuffed in a refuse bag on Thursday morning just 20m from her home in Enkanini. She had gone missing five days earlier.

After Dlamini made his way into the courtroom, he stared at people who had pushed their way into the public gallery. He appeared calm and turned around only after he was told to face the court.

Macaba also told the court that Dlamini had called his girlfriend and told her he had committed a crime.

During proceedings, Dlamini turned his back on the court again and looked at those seated in the gallery. His bail application will be heard on March 23.

Outside court about 70 angry community members protested and held placards which read “Stop abusing our children”.

South African National Civics Organisation chairperson Ayanda Tetani appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands. He said Dlamini’s shack was destroyed by angry residents last week.

“On the 23rd when this guy appears, the community must come as they did today to give support to the victim’s family. The community is very angry, but we can’t take the law into our hands. We must let the law do its part. The court must make an example out of this guy,” he said.

Social Justice Coalition member Nomthetho Nzime said: “I’m worried, if this guy can get bail the community will take the law into their own hands. They are angry that he (Dlamini) has done this.”

She appealed for calm. “The court must give him a life sentence, that’s what we want, so the others can see that it is not okay to kill our children. They must be kept safe,” she said.

Anovuyo’s uncle, Themba Ntsabo, said the family was still making funeral arrangements.

“We are still devastated. We will meet after Wednesday when the family receives DNA results that will confirm if it’s her body,” he said.
