Police out for clues after 5 killed in Nyanga shooting

- Lisa Isaacs

POLICE and the Nyanga Community Policing forum have appealed to the public to come forward with any information in the shooting of five people in the area at the weekend.

Nyanga CPF chairman Martin Makasi said the five were sitting in a car in Lindela Street in the Maumau settlement when gunmen opened fire on them at about 11.30pm.

Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said circumstances around the incident were under investigation.

He revealed that a 19-yearold woman was killed at the scene, and four men, aged between 22 and 25, died at a nearby hospital. He said a motive for the shooting was unknown and there were no suspects.

“Five murder cases were opened for investigation, no arrest (has been made) as yet,” said Van Wyk.

Makasi said the men were from New Crossroads and the woman from Nyanga.

“We don’t have much information at this stage. From what we understand, they didn’t do anything, they were just sitting in a car.”

He said they would have a full briefing of events with police later in the week.

“It is a very difficult time for the community. We have been working on a relationship with the community and police, trying to bring down the number of murders in Nyanga.

“We must put a stop to this. As a community, we cannot support this, and the way we can show this is if people come forward with information that can assist police in this matter.”

Anyone with any information about the shooting can contact Nyanga SAPS on 021 380 3320, 021 380 3375, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
