Cape teachers rewarded for excellence at annual national awards ceremony

Bay, was awarded third prize in the Excellence in Secondary School Leadership category, while Western Cape teacher Euginia Dladla received third prize in the Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Volunteer Supervisor category.

The winners in other categories included:

Excellence in Primary School Teaching – 1st place: Marna Jonker of Laerskool Mareetsane in North West, followed by Anneline Govender of Brenthurst Primary in Gauteng, and Nothando Ndlovu of Dukuza Primary in KwaZuluNat­al.

Excellence in Secondary School Teaching – 1st place: Wilhelmina Venter of Witteberg High in the Free State, followed by Refiloe Malatjie of UJ Metropolit­an Academy in Gauteng, and Ellen Nkuna of Swartrugge­ns Intermedia­te in North West.

Excellence in Primary School Leadership – 1st place: Silas Pillay of Halfway House Primary in Gauteng, followed by Amos Mabuza of Sindzawony­e in Mpumalanga, and Llewellyn Aiken of Vooruitsig Primary in the Northern Cape.

Excellence in Secondary School Leadership – 1st place: Leonard Kope Malatsi of St Pauls High in Limpopo, followed by Vuyani Langa of St Patricks Secondary in the Eastern Cape.

Criteria for awards included a high level of achievemen­t and commitment throughout a teaching career, showing endurance and perseveran­ce to the benefit of the school, and facing and overcoming challenges in and outside the school.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address, highlighti­ng the important role teachers play in developing a society.

He credited teachers with making him the man he was today, and said we would not have had the calibre of great people like Nelson Mandela, and would not have developed as a country over the past 20 years without the hard work and dedication of teachers, who were also responsibl­e for nurturing and developing the future of this country.

He went on to say the teachers honoured at the NTAs should be a shining example of what an exceptiona­l teacher should embody, and all teachers should strive to emulate the example they set.

The winners in each category walked away with prizes that included generous cash amounts in all categories, Samsung tablets and BlackBerry cellphones, plus double return airline tickets to any domestic destinatio­n.

Winners in the top eight categories each drove away in a brand-new Chevrolet Spark, all courtesy of sponsors, which included Vodacom, Airlink, Massmart and DBE.
