Herron slams ‘defamatory’ claim on MyCiTi option

No evictions or demolitions are to take place until the next court date

MAYCO member for Transport Brett Herron has refuted an accusation that he lied to the standing committee on transport and public works in the provincial legislature.

The implication – made by the South Road Families Association (SRFA) – comes after Herron made a presentation to the standing committee on a new MyCiTi bus route last week.

During the presentation, Herron slammed an alternative route presented by the SRFA and the Wynberg Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, saying the proposed route “makes no sense”.

SRFA spokesperson Clive Muller said: “We condemn in the strongest terms Herron’s deliberate lies and attempt to confuse the committee by rejecting our alternative route.

“We feel the Mayco member wants to divide our community by sending such a message of confusion and aims to weaken our resolve with these lies.”

SRFA recently took mayor Patricia de Lille, city manager Achmat Ebrahim and Herron to court with an interdict to stop the City from evicting them and demolishing the properties in South Road to make way for the City’s bus route.

On April 28, the City agreed in court that no evictions or demolitions would take place until a decision pending the next court date in September.

Herron responded to Muller yesterday, saying the accusation was defamatory. He said the first of 29 public open days on the roll-out of the MyCiTi service in the area would kick off on Friday.

He urged residents to attend meetings at the Claremont Civic Centre and Alphen Centre in Constantia on June 15 from 4pm until 8pm.
