Energising exploits

-

EVERY morning I receive an e-mail to tell me what time I will be powerless. I am prepared! Some examples:

6am: I sit at the window next to my gas heater – steaming cup of tea in hand, made on my gas stove – and watch the sun come up. The solitude, the stillness, the ever-changing eastern sky is such food for the soul! Then the sun is up, no need for lanterns any more, newly energised and ready for what the day may bring.

10am: I work from home, so naturally my computer is off (well, not really, but I save the battery for real emergencies!) So, time to go shopping. I have very little money, but, no problem. I spend hours windowshopping, trying on clothes I will never be able to buy, chat to cosmetics staff about new make-up trends, check food prices, eat samples offered, page through magazines – the list is endless, such joy!

12pm: Off to the beach with the dogs. They are delirious with happiness, and at least I get some exercise. I take a flask of hot coffee and a sandwich, and water for the dogs. I find a sunny spot, let the dogs run and watch the lazy waves curling over and over. I draw ridiculous things in the sand and quickly erase them with embarrassment. I chat to the regulars and catch up on their lives. I am at peace.

2pm: The best time to see customers. They have had lunch, and are chatty and receptive. They always have coffee available and are content to tell you about their families and troubles and heartaches and happiness.

6pm: My very best time for shedding. Glass of wine, gas heater, lanterns surrounding me. At about 7pm, the magic starts. Have you ever opened your door and walked outside during load shedding? The sky is spectacular! The stars have never been this bright against the black sky. The quietness is palpable.

In the far distance, I hear a dog barking but not even that can disturb my mood. My heart is filled with love and gratitude that I am part of this wonderful universe. Ank Gowans
