XOLANI SOTASHE and most of his executive were re-elected unopposed at the ANC’s Dullah Omar region conference at the weekend.

The region, which covers the city, held its elective conference at a hotel. The new leadership is set for the ANC’s provincial conference, which will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre this weekend, where a new provincial leadership will be elected.

The 283 delegates from branches across Cape Town elected Theo Joseph deputy chairman, Patrick Mngxunyeni treasurer, Vuyiso JJ Tyhalisisu secretary and Charlotte Heyns deputy secretary.

The executive remains the same, except for Faiz Joseph replacing Faizal Moosa.

Jacobs was nominated for the provincial chairman position, but did not get the requisite 25 percent support from the delegates.

The executive will go to the provincial congress with a mandate to re-elect Marius Fransman as provincial chairman.

Sotashe said the unopposed election showed the organisation was stable and united.

Sotashe claims the party has changed since the last elective conference in 2011.

“The point of order of the day was public spats and infighting, but now we are stable and united, and have one common goal – to unseat the DA.

“The mandate is to grow the organisation by stopping the bleeding we inherited when we were elected in 2011.

“Today we have more branches than we had in 2011. Going forward, we will give the DA a run for their money.”

Sotashe said the newly elected leadership was given a mandate to back Fransman and secretary Songezo Mjongile at the provincial elective conference.

Some of the reasons the Dullah Omar region had decided to retain Fransman and Mjongile, according to Sotashe, were because “they have carried this organisation from difficult times, so we don’t want to fix it when it is not broken”.

Without mentioning names, Sotashe said, “those without value must be replaced”.

The Boland region was still in conference late last night and the top five executive committee positions had not been announced.
