80 victims of shack fire being cared for

EIGHTY people, including eight babies, were left homeless after a fire destroyed 21 shacks in the Masiphumel­ele informal settlement near Kommetjie yesterday morning.

Charlotte Powell, the City’s Disaster Risk Management spokespers­on, said the affected people are being accommodat­ed in the Masiphumel­ele community hall. The Red Cross Society is providing hot meals, blankets and baby packs.

Powell said the City had provided people with kits to rebuild their homes.

Theo Layne, the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokeperso­n, said they had responded to the fire, which started in Phokela Street, just after 10.30am. It took about two hours to extinguish the blaze.
