Race lie kept alive

- Camps Bay

SO AMERICA now has its own “Wit Wolf ” in the form of Dylann Roof. A young man so seriously infected with the mental virus of racialism that he murdered nine people who looked different, and to whom he attributed inferior and dangerous mental attitudes simply on the basis of their skin colour.

And this in a country which went through a brutal civil war and social demonstrations while attempting to overcome its Original Sin.

The concept of “Race” is one of the most pernicious myths that has ever affected mankind. As the global recession continues, radical racialism is again on the rise.

We are all, especially those of us with less skin melanin, infected with this social virus to some degree. For me, it was a subliminal exposure through nice hymns like All things bright and beautiful (the original third verse), the aftertaste of eugenics and an education subtly designed to make me feel intellectually superior to the world’s lesser “races”. Those exposed to the fundamental Calvinism of South Africa received a far more blatant dose.

But “black” nationalism is no better as it continues to perpetuate social differentiation on the basis of skin colour. More specifically BEE only continues to keep this pernicious lie alive. By all means find ways of “uplifting” poverty-stricken communities, but remove all references to colour.

Administrative forms with boxes denoting ethnicity must be burnt.

Racialism is socially learnt behaviour and it can be unlearnt. James Cunningham
