Escaped prisoner still at large

Police were searching for an awaiting-trial prisoner who escaped in a police van after appearing in court in Malamulele, Limpopo, police said at the weekend.

Five had initially escaped on Tuesday after appearing in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court. The prisoners were about to be taken to police holding cells when they overpowered two officers.

“One handed himself in on Tuesday night, while three were captured on Thursday,” said police spokesperson Ronel Otto, adding that the prisoner on the run is to be tried for various charges of armed robbery.
