And brining still continues

-

ONE WONDERS whether the cabinet has its own case of schoolyard bullying or whether some ministers are simply conflict averse?

Minister Derek Hanekom for example, recently backed down from taking on Minister Gigaba, after initially criticising our new visa laws. Many would argue that a public brawl like that would’ve been in South Africa’s best interest.

A lesser known case is that of brining, the process of injecting SA frozen chicken with up to 40 percent salt water.

Minister Zokwana’s department has proposed reasonable limits to brining but, despite promising to do so more than a year ago, no regulations have actually been promulgated to date. At the same time however, Minister Motsoaledi’s department, has recommended to Parliament that brining be outlawed altogether.

Until then, the wealthy chicken bosses can inject salt water into chicken marketed specifically to poorer South Africans and there’s nothing any of us can do about it. DAVID WOLPERT CHIEF EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATION OF MEAT IMPORTERS AND EXPORTERS
