Expect fireworks at 4th of July Killarney meeting

- LEE MCGEORGE ABRAHAMS DAVE

WHILE this Saturday’s 4th of July Independence Day meeting at Killarney is primarily about the fifth round of the Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors, it will also feature a selection of American themed attractions. These include a New York police car doing duty as the official pace car and a street legal motorcycle Breakfast Run.

Static items include displays of Hot Rods, Ford Cobras and chromed Harley Davidsons. There is going to be the first-ever timed, hotdog eating race in the clubhouse, while minders will look after the little ones in the nearby kiddies play area.

The All-American influence on the track will be more obvious in the V8 Masters events, a one-make series of modified Ford V8s driven by competitors who must be over 45 years of age.

The greatest variety of cars is reserved for the Midas Clubman shootout, with a brace of Beemers taking on turbo Audis and hot VW Golfs.

The variety continues in the Mutlu Batteries Classic Car class with the eclectic entry list including a Ford Galaxy, a Capri Perana, Datsun 240Z, and a Chev Corvette Stingray among others.

In two-wheeled action, there will be two Mike Hopkins Regional series outings each for the Superbikes and Powersport/Classic classes, along with two Breakfast Run races for main-circuit rookies.

Racing is due to get under way after the final practice and qualifying sessions at 10am. Admission is R60 for adults and R20 for scholars under 16. There is no charge for kiddies under 12.
