Shark almost takes out world champion surfer in Jeffreys Bay
HE WAS waiting for the teeth to sink into him. That was the reaction yesterday of Mick Fanning, a three-time world surfing champion, following a shark attack in Jeffreys Bay.
Fanning was left kicking and screaming during one of South Africa’s most prestigious surfing events in Jeffreys Bay when a shark surfaced next to him, knocking the 34-year-old Australian off his board. But he emerged from the water unharmed.
“I was sitting there (when) I felt something get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking (and) trying to get it away. I punched him in the back.
“I instantly jumped away. It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming.
“I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth,” Fanning said.
The incident occurred during yesterday’s final of the World Surfing League’s (WSL) J-Bay Open, of which Fanning was the defending champion.
Competition spokesperson Amy Denman said Fanning was attacked by what was believed to be two sharks.
Kieren Perrow, the WSL commissioner, said organisers were relieved and thankful that no one was hurt. “Mick’s composure and quick acting in the face of a terrifying situation was nothing short of heroic.
“And the rapid response of our Water Safety personnel was absolutely commendable – they are truly world class at what they do.
“The safety of our athletes is an absolute priority for the WSL and, after discussions with both finalists, we have decided to cancel the remainder of the competition at the J-Bay Open,” Perrow said.
Event spokesperson Brenton Williams said Fanning and Julian Wilson, who were both finalists, were declared the joint winners.
