Public warned to be careful when buying subsidised houses
The City of Cape Town has warned potential buyers of government RDP houses to make sure the house they intend buying can be sold legally.
The City urged residents to exercise cautionwhen buying a State-subsidised dwelling, known as an RDP house, as there were restrictions on the sale of such houses.
In terms of the National Housing Act, the sale of an RDP house is forbidden for eight years after the beneficiary had acquired the house, unless the Western Cape government had approved the sale. The City’s mayoral committee member for human settlements, Benedicta van Minnen, said illegal sales were taking place outside of the deed’s office process.
