Group of boys to appear after pupil, 16, stabbed
A PUPIL at Indwe Secondary School at Kwanonqaba Township in Mossel Bay is recovering in hospital after being stabbed, allegedly by seven boys.
The Grade 8 pupil’s alleged attackers, aged 13 to 17, were arrested for assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm for the stabbing which occurred last Tuesday. The 16year-old was stabbed in his face, back and left arm.
The youths were released into their parents’ custody.
Police spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said: “At about 9.45am, the group allegedly entered a classroom and stabbed the victim several times. He is currently in a hospital in Mossel Bay in a stable condition.”
She said the boys were expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court this week.
Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, said it was alleged that some of the accused were not pupils at the school but gained access by wearing its uniform.
“Counselling was provided to the teachers and pupils at the school. A social worker has also visited it.
“The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has a number of behavioural interventions to try to deter pupils from engaging in antisocial or gang-related activities,” she said, noting that the province, unlike other provinces, was faced with “the scourge of gangsterism” which was plaguing some communities.
“Unfortunately, in communities where gangsterism is prominent, it can sometimes spill into our schools. The WCED does all it can to protect pupils and schools. Ultimately, it is also the responsibility of the police and communities to ensure the safety by preventing gangsterism.”
She said that in light of reports of violence taking place in a certain area, schools implemented their safety plan.
“During an incident of gang violence and/or trespassing, the Safe Schools call centre ensures the relevant authorities are alerted to deal with gang intimidation in and around the school,” Shelver said.
