AFTER three days of competitio­n, the South African swimming team has no plans of slowing down as the medals and championsh­ip records continue to pour in at the 11th All Africa Games in Brazzavill­e. Mzansi’s finest added seven gold, two silver and three bronze medals to their tally on Tuesday night.

Chad le Clos finished the 50m butterfly with a new championsh­ip record time of 23.51, winning his second gold of the competitio­n.

Limpopo’s Martin Bindell and Gauteng’s Ricky Ellis were the gold and silver duo in the 200m backstroke, clocking 2:02.23 and 2:02.32 respective­ly.

The fast-improving Clayton Jimmie continued to impress when he swam to a gold medal in the 100m freestyle in 49.93, with teammate Caydon Muller claiming the bronze in 50.28.

In the 400m freestyle, Karin Prinsloo was just under a second ahead of the group when she touched the wall in 4:18.86, with the bronze medal going to compatriot Marlies Ross in 4:19.43. Prinsloo also won silver in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:02.53, while the bronze medal in the race went to Jessica Ashley Cooper in 1:03.32. Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry won the gold in 1:01.15.

In the 50m breaststro­ke, Tatjana Schoenmake­r swam her way to the top of the podium in a time of 32.49, ahead of Egypt’s Maii Atif in 32.58 and Namibia’s Daniela Lindemeier in 32.69. Kelly Gunnell finished fourth in the event in 32.85.

In the 4x100m freestyle relay, Ross, Cooper, Prinsloo and Vanessa Mohr bagged the gold medal in a new championsh­ip record time of 3:49.04.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, Le Clos, Brent Szurdoki, Calvyn Justus and Myles Brown also set a new championsh­ip record with a golden 7:18.62.
