-

LONDON: John Terry led the tributes to his former international teammate Wayne Rooney by suggesting the country’s new record goalscorer is “England’s best ever player”.

Terry was just one of Rooney’s current or former teammates to lavish praise on Rooney after his record-breaking 50th goal against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday night.

“I’ve had the pleasure to play alongside Wayne and for me he’s England’s best ever. I’ve seen first hand him do things with the ball that I’ve never seen before.

“A winner and a leader and so proud to see him wearing the armband captaining our country.”

Prolific former England striker Gary Lineker said of Rooney (pictured); “Congratulations to Wayne Rooney on succeeding where all others failed by becoming England’s highest goalscorer. A magnificent achievement from a tremendous footballer.”

Michael Owen also joked at the fact that he was overtaken by his former club and international teammate.

“Congratulations Wazza, a record many have had a crack at breaking including me! Huge achievement,” said Owen.

Raheem Sterling took to Instagram to congratulate Rooney, while his current Manchester United teammates Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Michael Carrick also paid tribute to the 29- year-old.

Steven Gerrard, who was replaced as England captain by the former Everton man, labelled Rooney’s personal milestone of 50 international goals an “incredible achievement”.

Frank Lampard praised Rooney for the “hard work and commitment” he has given to the national team since making his debut back in 2003.

Gary Cahill tweeted a picture of himself alongside Rooney along with the words: “Special day for the skipper. What an amazing achievement. Making history.”

Rooney’s strike partner Harry Kane said: “I grew up watching this man score for England! It was a honour to share that moment with him! Congrats.” – Daily Mail
