Bapela, and the exiles?

- Cape Town FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2015 Dublin

IT WILL be interesting to see what Obed Bapela does about the numerous exiles who obtained passports from the countries of their exile.

Think of former President Thabo Mbeki and Dr Frene Ginwala with British passports, Abdul Minty with a New Zealand passport… Ronald Reynolds point: I have a strong moral compass based not on whether I am going to heaven or hell, but based on what my awesome parents taught me – and they were atheists, too.

Be kind to everyone, and that means everyone. Commit random acts of kindness daily, love your children with every fibre of your being, teach them honesty and integrity, be sensitive, and most of all, have empathy. Not because God is watching, apparently, but because it is the right thing to do.

Life is short, nobody asked to be born sickly, poor or a refugee, nobody asked to be born deformed or bipolar, short or tall, or anything else. We are here and we should just make the most of it; it’s a one-off, one-in-a-million chance that we are here, so be grateful for every day.

I left South Africa some years ago, and am back on holiday. South Africans are so friendly and kind, it is a real treat to be back. Paula Marnitz
