Cellular reach tipped to jump
CELLPHONE subscriptions in Tanzania were expected to jump by almost a fifth within the next two years as telecoms companies expanded into the country’s rural areas, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority said. The east African nation is offering incentives to investors willing to extend services to non-urban populations as it seeks to achieve at least 75 percent coverage by 2017, Ally Simba, the directorgeneral of the authority, said on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam. That should help the number of subscribers grow to 40 million from 34 million in June, he said. Tanzanian carriers are becoming the country’s leading internetservice providers. – Bloomberg
