Former mayor of Maritzburg dies after heart attack
The first democratically elected mayor of Pietermaritzburg, Omar Latiff, 62, died after a heart attack on Friday night.
Late on Wednesday he was rushed to the Mediclinic in Pietermaritzburg and later transferred to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban, where he died. His friend of many years, Babu Baijoo, said they met in the 1980s as members of the Pietermaritzburg Combined Residents and Ratepayers Association. Latiff was later elected city mayor and held the office from 1996 to 2000.
He graduated with a B Comm at the then-University of Durban Westville (University of KwaZulu-Natal) in 1976. He was the chairman of LMD Africa Chartered Accountants.
