Former mayor of Maritzburg dies after heart attack

The first democratic­ally elected mayor of Pietermari­tzburg, Omar Latiff, 62, died after a heart attack on Friday night.

Late on Wednesday he was rushed to the Mediclinic in Pietermari­tzburg and later transferre­d to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban, where he died. His friend of many years, Babu Baijoo, said they met in the 1980s as members of the Pietermari­tzburg Combined Residents and Ratepayers Associatio­n. Latiff was later elected city mayor and held the office from 1996 to 2000.

He graduated with a B Comm at the then-University of Durban Westville (University of KwaZulu-Natal) in 1976. He was the chairman of LMD Africa Chartered Accountant­s.
