Local Gilbert & Sullivan Society snaps up numerous awards in England

THE Cape Town Gilbert & Sullivan Society followed their recent soldout Mikado season at Artscape with a recent triumphant visit to the UK.

Of the 14 societies from around the globe who participat­ed in the 22nd Internatio­nal Gilbert & Sullivan Festival last month in Harrogate, England, 12 of the 14 companies performed traditiona­l G&S operas.

From these the Cape Town Society were judged worthy of 12 major awards.

A Silver Medal was awarded for The Mikado. They received the Best Traditiona­l Opera award; The Best Chorus award; and Peter Kramer – as the Mikado – was judged Best Male

Performer Monika Voysey’s Katisha won Best Character Actress award.

Karen Wilson-Harris and Marco Titus (Yum-Yum and Nanki Poo) received Best Duet award.

Roché Buckle (in her debut as a profession­al director) received 1st Runner Up as Best Director, while Alastair Cockburn received First Runner Up as Best Musical Director.

First Runner Up Supporting Actor went to Stephan le Roux as Pooh-Bah. Another 1st Runner Up Best Concerted Item went to the society for their finale. Marco Titus’s Nanki-Poo received First Runner Up for Best Male Voice and 2nd Runner Up for Most Animated Chorus was awarded for their rendering of For He’s Gone and Married Yum-Yum.

After performing in Buxton the society performed their adjudicate­d performanc­e of The Mikado to much stomping and applause from packed house in The Royal Hall in Harrogate.

Congratula­tions one and all. A wonderful combined effort.
