Your royal Johannes

-

RECENT news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becoming the UK’s longest serving monarch called to mind her official visit to South Africa during the late 1940s in her capacity as Her Royal Highness, the Princess Elizabeth.

A Free State farmer was presented to the young princess and, being unaware of the correct protocol, enquired: “I never met a princess before, what should I call you?” To put the man at ease, Elizabeth allowed him to drop the “Royal” and said “You may call me Your Highness”, to which he replied: “Johannes? Hey, that’s my name too!” Stephen Pain
