Cycling:

For the truly brave, with Amsterdam’s 780 000 residents owning about 881 000 bicycles and one in three riding to work. There are ample cycle hire shops to choose from.

Flower market:

In the past, nurserymen sailed up the Amstel from their smallholdings and moored at these boats to sell cut flowers. Today it’s the only floating flower market in the world.

Drugs:

Shops sell everything from magic mushrooms and cocaine cuts to paraphernalia to inject drugs. Or visit the Marijuana and Hash Museum.

Hungry:

Street food, friet, chips with mayonnaise in a paper cone, or waffles coated in chocolate, mmm yummy! Another tasty pastime is Dutch cheese tasting.

Red Lights:

See barely clad prostitutes bathed in a red neon glow in the Red Light District.

Museum visits:

From the Sex Museum, the National Centre for Science and Technology and the Amsterdam Dungeon to the Heineken Experience, which offers free beer.

Take a walk:

Be distracted by historic buildings and decorative skylines. One of them is Magna Plaza, where a wall panel depicts the original Postkantoor redeveloped and opened in 1990 as the city’s first shopping mall.
