Tajikistan struck by 7.2 quake
An earthquake measuring 7.2 magnitude struck Tajikistan yesterday, shaking buildings as far as New Delhi in India, and in Pakistan, the US Geological Survey and witnesses said.
A spokesperson for Tajikistan’s Emergencies Committee said it had no information on casualties or damage from the quake. The quake did not affect Russian military bases in the country, RIA news agency reported, citing Russia’s defence ministry.
The epicentre of the quake was 111km south-west of Karakul, the survey said, a sparsely populated mountainous area.
A Dushanbe resident said by telephone the quake had been felt in the capital, but described it as moderate.
