Reliable, efficient emergency services at Rondebosch Main find wallet thief

- John (Jack) Kearney Cape Town

AS A visitor to Cape Town, I would like to express publicly my appreciation for the help I received from managerial and security personnel at Rondebosch Main on Saturday, January 9. My first errand was to make a deposit at the FNB upstairs ATM. Secondly, I needed to do a small amount of shopping at the downstairs Pick n Pay.

Rather foolishly, I did not at first take a basket at the supermarket while I took a brief look at the available newspapers at the shop entrance. Having then taken a basket, I completed my shopping, but discovered that my wallet was not in the basket when I went to pay.

Assuming that I must have left it at the news-stand, I went to check, but had no luck.

With some members of staff I searched the shop, but there was no sign anywhere of the wallet. Following the advice of store manager Keith and his assistant Jennifer, I then went to check upstairs with the head of security for the building, the very helpful Didier, whose camera revealed that I left the ATM clutching the wallet.

Back downstairs, the manager requested Kiduma, supermarket head of (Panghela) security, to investigate. After assiduous work on his camera for over an hour, he discovered that a fairly young woman had taken the wallet from the newspaper stand. As a regular customer, she was then apprehended at her nearby place of employment and ordered to return the wallet.

When I got the message later that afternoon to come and retrieve my wallet, I found – to my immense relief – that it was intact (though I had in any case meanwhile cancelled all my ATM cards).

I’ve already thanked Didier, Keith, Jennifer and Kiduma, but would like your readers to know what generous, efficient and reliable emergency services are available at Rondebosch Main.
