Vigil for murdered Shamonique, 11
“REMEMBER, always remember.” These words echoed continuously at Wednesday night’s vigil for the murdered Shamonique Claasen in Groenheuwel, Paarl.
Shamonique, who was affectionately called Simma, was reported missing at the weekend. Her mother, Magdeline Claasen, returned from shopping on Saturday to find her gone. Instead of celebrating her 11th birthday, her family launched a search for her.
Shamonique’s body was found on Monday under a bed in her uncle’s house, in a black bag tied with wire. Her family also live on the property.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said a 23-year-old man was charged with her murder and appeared briefly in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The matter was postponed to March 17.
On Wednesday, the community held the vigil.
Elaine Williams, spokesperson for the Claasen family, said it was a difficult time for the family.
Shamonique’s father, Shawn Lewis, was supported by their extended families. Her mother was unable to attend.
Lewis broke down when his daughter’s best friend lit a candle in remembrance of their “little ray of sunshine”.
Anthea Michaels – the mother of Shaskia, who went missing in 2013 but was never found – came to pay her respects. Shaskia, 4, went missing from outside her home in Tafelsig on September 5, 2013.
“Be thankful that at least… now you have your child and you can lay her to rest,” said Michaels. She said her heart and prayers went out to the family.
Family friend Yunique Dechanell said the family were raising money for the funeral.
