- Staff Writer

TWO people are expected to be sentenced in the Parow Regional Court after they were found guilty on charges of human trafficking for sexual purposes.

This week the National Prosecuting Authority was granted a preservation order of R31 062, money seized when the house in Winelands was raided.

Jiang Wang and Yiting Wong were found guilty in May last year on two counts of human trafficking and one of running a brothel.

Wong and Wang were also charged with kidnapping.

In 2013, police were tipped off about a house in Winelands where women were trafficked.

They raided the house and found a Chinese woman and a Thai woman.

The Thai woman gave police a statement saying that she was trafficked under the pretence that she would work at a casino or a hotel when she arrived in South Africa.

Police obtained a statement from another woman who was trafficked, but who managed to escape.

She also said her recruiter gave the same information of working at a casino or hotel when she would arrive in the country.

Sentencing is expected on August 5.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila yesterday said the authority applied and succeeded in obtaining a preservation order of R31 062 seized during the raid in 2013.

The order, granted by the Western Cape High Court, says the money seized in September 2013 will remain in the custody of the police until the expiration of the order, or until the conclusion of the forfeiture proceedings to be instituted by the NPA in respect of the property under Section 48 of the Poca (Proceeds of Crime Act) or until the matter is otherwise concluded.

“The NPA welcomes the preservation order that was granted by the court, “Ntabazalila said.
